Product Overview
Galvanized steel is mild steel that has been fully dipped in molten zinc, so every surface, inside and out, carries a protective coating of 80 to 100 microns. The zinc shields the steel from oxygen and moisture, and it also protects it cathodically: small scratches or cut areas do not rust and need no touch-up. In the harshest soils galvanized steel lasts about 35 to 50 years, and in less corrosive soils 75 years or more.

Good to know
- Galvanized steel does eventually rust, but very slowly.
- Humidity affects corrosion more than temperature does.
- In moist conditions, keep it from direct contact with copper or brass, which corrode zinc quickly. Water should flow from the galvanized part towards copper or brass, not the other way.
- Like most metals it heats up in direct sun, but it handles heat and cold well.

Galvanized Steel: Frequently Asked Questions
How thick is the zinc coating on your galvanized steel?
Our hot-dip galvanized steel carries a zinc coating of 80 to 100 microns on every surface.
How long does galvanized steel last?
About 35 to 50 years in the harshest soils, and 75 years or more in less corrosive soils.
Does scratched galvanized steel need touch-up?
No. The zinc protects nearby exposed steel cathodically, so small scratches and damaged areas do not rust and need no touch-up.
